Hotel d'Angleterre

The Hotel d'Angleterre has occupied the corner of Kongens Nytorv since 1755, making it not only the oldest luxury hotel in Denmark but a fixture of Copenhagen life since roughly the time George Washington was still a colonial surveyor. Hans Christian Andersen was a guest, as was every visiting dignitary the Danish court wished to impress, a role the hotel has performed with quiet, unshowy confidence for two and a half centuries. The Balthazar champagne bar has become one of the city's great meeting points: velvet, brass, and the particular calm that comes from never having had anything to prove. 90 rooms on Copenhagen's grandest square, which feels as though it was built around the hotel rather than the other way round.
